“Cooking is 80% confidence, a skill best acquired starting from when the apron strings wrap around you twice.” This quote from Barbara Kingsolver in her book “Animal, Vegetable, Miracle” is why she is one of my favorite authors…and this one of my favorite books. She and her family vowed that, for one year, they would only buy food raised in their own neighborhood, grow it themselves or learn to live without it. In the process, the kids learned things about food that they could never have realized before. And kids are curious like that! When kids are here for cooking classes, it’s a whole different process for us. The culinary instructors that understand the innate and full-on open eagerness of kids to learn, are truly the best instructors. Yes it gets messy. Yes it gets loud sometimes and yes, we have to remind the young ones often…but the energy in that kitchen is unbelievable. It’s a true joy to witness this…and it starts when they walk in the door and we wrap those apron strings around them twice!
