Summer is here, and so is our amazing lineup of classes at The Culinary Center. With nearly 70 classes, camps and events in June, it’s hard to pick just one. Come Sail Away! A ‘Spirited’ Mexican Getaway
Saturday, June 5th 6:30 PM

Mexican Getaway Class

This class is equal parts cocktails, dinner and fun! Bruce Campbell (the “Cruise Director”) will take you to various ports of call across Mexico, learning about tequila and mezcals and sampling a Spicy Mango Tequila Infusion, Paloma and more. Don’t worry – you won’t be drinking on an empty stomach. A South-of-the-border-inspired menu of Margarita Chicken with Warm Jalapeno Corn Relish and Smoked Pork Quesadillas awaits. Be sure to save room for a special dessert sweet and cocktail.

Full-Day Backyard Smoking Workshop
Sunday, June 6th 9:00 AM

Talk about an amazing Father’s Day gift. This class is one of the most unique ones we offer. Bring your own smoker and learn hands on with other BBQ enthusiasts outside behind the center. Join Chef Richard, Bruce Campbell and Larry (the BBQ Dude) in an all day, live demonstration class. These guys know what they’re doing – they have nearly 100 years of BBQ experience under their belts.

In this class, you’ll learn about the meats, butchering, trimming, working with chickens, mops, rubs, flavor stages, and more! By days end, you will be a master of your smoker, and have made Baby Back Ribs, BBQ Chicken, BBQ Spiced Italian Sausage and your own signature rub!

Cooking for One or Two
Wednesday, June 9th 6:30 PM

If you love cooking, but don’t do it because you only need to cook for one or two, join Chef Jill, our culinary rock star and Lead Instructor and learn how to fix that! She will not only teach you essential tips and techniques, but also the strategy on how to plan ahead and stock your pantry with essential staples to ensure you can whip up a supper at home instead of ordering out.

Food For Friends: Creative Appetizers For Entertaining
Thursday, June 10th 6:30 PM

Chef Jill goes from cooking for 1 to cooking for a crowd. Learn to impress your guests by adding some unique and sophisticated appetizers to your repertoire. She will share some of her favorite recipes, including Herbed Goat Cheese Brulee, Beef Tenderloin Sliders with homemade Horseradish Sauce and Pao de Queijo (Brazilian Cheese Bread). You will think you are on the set of a Food Network show listening to Chef Jill teach and entertain. But you actually get to take part in the class and eat the food, too!

Tortilla Heaven! Learn To Make Authentic Tortillas From Scratch

Chef Jill’s Mexican Grandma would be proud to see her teach the authentic way to make tortillas. She will teach you how to make both corn and flour tortillas, from mixing, rolling, pressing to cooking and storing them. You may even learn a few recipes to show off your homemade creations and impress your crowd.

Global Ciders – A Saturday Afternoon Tasting Experience
Saturday, June 12th 2:00 PM

Summer Saturday Afternoons are great for sampling cold, refreshing ciders. Certified Specialist of Wine, Jerri Lesh, will walk you through some rare versions and some commonly found ciders. Learn about the different fruit varietals used in its making, and the long history of ciders. BONUS: This class comes with paired small snacks to enhance your cider tastings.

Girls Night Out! A Taste of N’Awlin’s – Jambalaya, Muffuletta & More!
Thursday June 17th 6:30 PM

Downtown Overland Park transforms to The French Quarter (not really) as “King of the Cocktail” Chef Bruce Campbell whisks us away to Bourbon Street for an evening of cocktails and southern-inspired food for a Girls Night Out! Start off with Creole Dip and a Hurricane, then enjoy Cajun delights like Muffuletta, Jambalaya and a Black Eyed Pea Salad.

Wicked Good Food! A Tribute to Boston’s Union Oyster House
Friday, June 18th 6:30 PM

We pay homage to one of America’s oldest restaurants – Union Oyster House in Boston. Since opening in 1826, this restaurant has been serving up oysters and seafood to Beantown’s residents and tourists. Enjoy Basque Style Mussels, Clam “Chowda,” Pan-Seared Shrimp and Boston Baked Beans.  Dessert? Boston Cream Pie, of course.

Learn To Grill, Vegan-Style! A Smokin’ Hot Plant-Based BBQ

That’s right, grilling isn’t just for meat anymore!  You’re about to discover plenty of fabulous meat alternatives and plant-based dishes that vegans can cook up and enjoy fresh off the grill – and Chef LaDonna Johnson in ‘da house to show you how it’s done. You’ll be blown away with interesting ideas that are completely out of the box as she covers everything you love about traditional BBQ dishes but with her signature kick of creative plant-based alternatives, colorful veggies, and tons of flavor!

Gimme Sum Dim Sum

Dim Sum has been a favorite Sunday meal of Asian families for centuries. Dim Sum (or Yum Cha, meaning “taking tea”) is basically the Asian version of “tapas” or “small dishes.” The diner chooses from a variety of offerings brought to the table, and sometimes even prepared tableside. These little dishes make great appetizers, too.

Join Chef & Lead Instructor Jill Garcia Schmidt as she teaches you the basics of how to prepare a variety of authentic Asian Dim Sum. So good! Your family will be clamoring, “Now gimme sum Dim Sum!”
