Reasons why Swedes apply to unlicensed casinos
Casinos without a Swedish license are regulated by another gambling authority.
Just over three years ago, the new Gambling Act was introduced in Sweden, which with its licensing system replaced the monopoly around gambling for money in the country and thus changed the gambling market drastically. Today, all gambling companies that want to market themselves to Swedish players must be regulated by a license issued by the Swedish Gambling Inspectorate. Once granted one, they must follow the rules and regulations imposed on them by the Gambling Act.Roughly 400 gaming companies are currently operating under a Swedish gaming license, of which 60 of these hold a license for commercial online gaming – that is, are approved to conduct casino operations online. But despite the fact that so many gambling companies hold a license, there are companies that consider the law too strict, and choose to apply for a license abroad.
Colloquially, these are usually called casinos without a Swedish license, and are currently fully legal to visit as a Swedish player. Comparison sites such as https://casino-utan-svensk-licens.info/ have therefore become immensely popular among players who wish to explore the range of unlicensed gaming options, and the fact is that a large number of Swedish players actually prefer to play on these platforms. But how does this happen, and what does the security situation look like on these sites?
Just because the Swedish Gambling Authority does not regulate these websites does not mean that the foreign gambling sites are completely unregulated. They still have to comply with gambling laws and regulations, but instead of the Gambling Authority issuing licenses and ensuring that the rules are followed, it is another country's gambling authority that does it.
Some examples are the gambling authorities of Great Britain, Malta and Curacao, which all place strict requirements on the players. Which means that consumer protection still has the highest priority on these websites, even if the regulations are slightly different compared to the Swedish one.
Some of the biggest differences between casinos with a Swedish license and casinos without a license are that the latter do not offer the self- exclusion tool Spelpaus or the e-identification service BankID.
Spelpaus is a service created by the Spelinspektionen which makes it possible for Swedish players to shut themselves off from all licensed games for a certain period of time. This is to reduce the risk of excessive gambling. Since casinos without a Swedish license are not subject to the same regulations, the suspension does not apply to these sites.
The BankID e-identification service for registration, deposits and withdrawals is also exclusive to Swedish-licensed gambling sites. The biggest advantages of BankID in casinos are the almost unbeatable convenience and security that the service offers players - both in terms of registrations and monetary transactions.
Players can still feel safe at foreign casinos
Although Swedish licensed casinos are recommended for Swedish players due to the security, flexibility and convenience they offer, it is neither illegal nor necessarily unsafe to play at foreign casinos.
As long as they are regulated, and preferably by a gambling commission with high requirements, Swedish players can still feel safe. However, this presupposes that you are well versed in the license and understand that you cannot turn to the Swedish gambling authority for help.
Not the same restrictions on bonuses
One of the reasons why many Swedish players turned to foreign casinos after the introduction of the new Swedish law, is because of the restrictions on bonuses that the Swedish gaming license has.
Within the framework of the Swedish Gambling Act, gambling companies may not offer more than one bonus to each player per license, which differs from other gambling regulations where many bonuses can be offered instead. Because more players appreciate the feeling of being able to claim bonuses, they have thus applied to casinos without a Swedish license.
However, one must not forget that there is a reason for the restrictions on casino bonuses. The Swedish government, together with the Swedish Gaming Authority, sees a risk where easy access to bonuses can lead to excessive gambling. By minimizing the amount of bonuses that were distributed to the players, the goal is for the Swedes to play less, but even more responsibly.
It's easy to get drawn into the world of gaming and its colorful slot machines and nerve-wracking table games. However, one should never forget the risks that come with real money gambling. It is therefore important to always prioritize safety and only play with money you can afford to lose.
As a Swedish player, there are many advantages to choosing a Swedish operator. If you still choose a foreign online casino, it is important to check whether the gambling companies hold a valid license as all licenses stand for safe gambling - even if certain regulations regarding bonuses and registration methods may differ.
In addition, gambling for money should be seen as an entertaining leisure activity, not something you engage in because you feel you have to or to make money. If help is needed, services such as Spelpaus and Stödlinjen are available.
