A year later: Should I return to Surgeon Simulator 2?

In 2020, the surgeon simulator Surgeon Simulator 2 was released on PC in the Epic Games Store, and in the review of the friv game, we noted a lot of shortcomings. Now that the project has gone to Steam and Xbox consoles, we decided to return and evaluate the changes made by Friv2Online Studio over the past year. We share our impressions in a short review.

The new edition of Surgeon Simulator 2 has been subtitled Access All Areas, abbreviated as "AAA". It offers the following improvements:

Updated character models - more detailed and expressive;
New free costumes for all heroes, including uniforms, hats, gloves and other items of clothing;
New in-game modifier system compatible with Twitch;

All previously released content and all free updates that will be added in the future;
Lots of custom levels created in the editor;
Controller support, fixes and improvements, and cross-platform play.
Of course, the EGS version of the game has also been upgraded to Access All Areas, and gamers on all platforms and services (PC and Xbox, Steam and EGS) can play against each other in co-op matches.

So now there is really a lot of content here. There was a lot of it in Surgeon Simulator 2 and on release, but now it has become even more.

This is the story campaign, which is recommended to go through first of all in order to get used to the difficult gameplay mechanics. And an arcade multiplayer mode where surgeons will cross scalpels, fighting each for himself. And the levels created by the developers and the community - there are quite a lot of them, they are sorted according to several criteria, and among them there are real gems, such as, for example, bowling or its own parody of Among Us. And a creative mode where you can create your own challenges and share them with other players.

I was pleasantly surprised by the quick search for partners for a cooperative game : there are still a lot of players in Surgeon Simulator 2: Access All Areas, and the crossplay available in the project probably played an important role in this. Users are friendly, and now you can communicate with them in voice chat, and not just gestures, as before.

The disadvantages of Surgeon Simulator 2 are exactly the same as at the start: first of all, this is a very specific control, which is deliberately made extremely inconvenient. Managing the naughty hand of a clumsy surgeon is still a torment, and if you are not a fan of such games, you will not get positive emotions from the simulator. However, this is a great option for streamers: your viewers will gloat a lot, watching how everything falls out of your hands.

So is it worth returning to the frivgame if you didn’t master it at the release a year ago or abandoned it due to lack of content? In general, it is worth it, if only for the sake of looking at new cards and appreciating the fresh costumes of the heroes. But if your soul does not lie to such "mocking" simulators, it is better to pass by.
